Though it's already our 5th year this was most definitely our most exciting Chanukah ever at Dolphin Beach!

See pics of the event here and a short video clip here.

But for the full report let's start at the beginning...

As the hot pizzas flying out of the oven with the fresh felafels and delicious sausages off the Braai (parev) had everyone enjoying the food and drinks while the kids were bouncing on the jumping castles and the kids (and kids at heart) were climbing the three fire trucks (thanks CT's finest)... All this was leading up to the amazing acts of the African Acrobats whose feats of feet had the crowd enthralled leading up to the star of the show Choni G whose golden voice swept over the sand dunes with Jewish and Hassidic Reggae classics had the crowd on their feet and calling for more (you can hear Choni's Chanukah song at the bottom of the Sydenham Shul home page).

Deputy Mayor of the City of Cape Town Ian Neilson brought special greeting from the city and we were very honoured to have him with us for the fifth year running...

Then as the sun began to set over the horizon, the cameras began to roll broadcasting our Chanukah event live (thanks Shawn Levin, Samuel Ginsberg, E2E, and the amazing staff at www.Jewish.tv who enabled our site www.TheShul.co.za/live to share our celebration with 459 million people (the number of people with internet access worldwide) though the stats arent yet in of how many people actually logged in...

The shimmering Ice Menorah (thanks to www.IceArt.co.za) stood tall as the beautiful torches awaited Rabbi Mendel Popack who led the blessings and kindled the beautiful Chanukah lights to the sounds of Chazan Barry Braun and the amazing music of Tyrone Lipman, Roy Castle and Ryan Lipman as the flames began to shine in the dark night. As the dancing picked up, hundreds of latkes, doughnuts, and chocolate coins were given out in true Chanukah spirit.

The program opened up with a moving prayer for the rain and thank G-d it held out until the very end when after the African Dancers did an amazing fire show lighting up the night and a last song by Choni G, the clouds opened up and all the rain that had been waiting for us came pouring down, but not strong enough to extinguish the flames lit inside the hearts of everyone who joined in for a true celebration of light...

This special night was dedicated to a special little boy Joseph Jack - Yirmiyahu Yaakov - Moshal, may the merit bring him a happy and healthy life of Torah, Chuppah and Good Deeds.
